Tai Chi

Tai Chi Chuan (Taught by James Fox and Cameron Parker)
Tai Chi has its origins in Taoism and Martial Arts. Tai Chi is a slow-motion, moving meditative exercise for relaxation, health and self-defense. Originally from China, Tai Chi has gained popularity in America and throughout the rest of the world for its health benefits. This class teaches the 103 authentic movements developed by the Yang family (one of the top five masters in China). It combines mind-intent, use of internal and external chi, and continuity in all movements. This practice will promote better general health, greater flexibility, concentration, and balance.

Taoist Medical Qigong (Taught by James Fox)
This class teaches the ancient Taoist medical qigong principles and practices, derived from traditional Chinese medicine. This qigong practice is specifically designed to facilitate health maintenance, healing, spiritual clarity, and internal harmony. Classes combine meditation with soft mind-directed movements intended to open and circulate Qi (chi) throughout the meridian system. Students will learn traditional Chinese medicine principles and applications as a part of the qigong practice.

  Pilates

Stott Pilates Mat (Beg. & Int.) (Taught by Penny Edwards)
Modifications and healthy building blocks will be given to allow participants to grow and develop through the Pilates idiom. STOTT Pilates builds upon Joseph Pilates' vision by incorporating the latest medical research, modern exercise principles and contemporary thinking about spinal rehabilitation and performance enhancement. For example, the original Pilates approach promoted a flat back, but Stott Pilates exercises are designed to restore the natural curves of the spine and re-balance muscles around the joints. This class is appropriate for beginners to intermediate participants.

  Therapeutic Exercise

Feldenkrais (Taught by Deborah Skell)
The Feldenkrais Method is a form of somatic education that uses gentle movement and directed attention to improve movement and enhance human functioning. Through this Method, one can increase their ease and range of motion, improve flexibility and coordination, and rediscover their innate capacity for graceful, efficient movement. The Feldenkrais Method is based on principles of physics, biomechanics and an empirical understanding of learning and human development. In the class students refine their ability to detect the genesis point of a movement. If the presenting issue is a stiff neck, it could start elsewhere -- the foot, knee or chest. The work cannot be formulaic, since we are all very distinct individuals.
